Adduned Cymru - The Wales Pledge

Adduned Cymru - The Wales Pledge

Adduned Cymru – The Wales Pledge has been created by the University of Wales to ensure that the assets it holds will continue to benefit the whole of Wales.

With a fund value of £6.8m, it will entail a series of strategic arrangements including the establishment of a number of charitable bodies to safeguard the traditional services associated with the University.

Within a period of transformational change for higher education in Wales, in creating Adduned Cymru – The Wales Pledge, the University will safeguard its legacy for future generations and Wales as a whole, and remain faithful to its core values and ensuring the assets serve the purpose for which they were intended. Adduned Cymru – The Wales Pledge will include:

UW Restricted Endowments Trust (UWRET) - this will safeguard the numerous charitable gifts the University has received over the years, currently standing at £5.5m, which have been donated for dedicated purposes. More information about this independent charitable trust and the Y Werin Legacy Fund, established by UWRET in 2016 as the scheme under which the UWRET Trustee will make awards and grants, can be found on their website – www.ywerinlegacyfund.wales

Wales Heritage Academy - this was announced to promote and celebrate the dynamic heritage of Wales, with a commitment to further the work of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies and the Dictionary of the Welsh Language. It will also safeguard and further the work of the University of Wales Press, which has a proud tradition of serving Wales and all its universities by publishing outstanding scholarly publications. In November 2014, Canolfan Uwchefrydiau Cymreig A Cheltaidd (Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies) Cyfyngedig was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of the University. In October 2015, this company became a registered charity (No: 1163796).

The Gregynog Trust - this will safeguard for the nation Gregynog Hall, the historic house and country estate gifted to the University of Wales by Margaret Davies of Llandinam in 1960.

Legacy of the Welsh Churches Act - the land still held in Trust by the University under the Welsh Churches Act, will be placed into a separate trust.

Further information regarding Adduned Cymru – The Wales Pledge can be found in the brochure below. In this document, the UW Restricted Endowments Fund is referred to as The Wales Universities Trust.
