University Mace

University Mace

The University mace was presented by the British Steel Corporation in June 1985.

The mace is made of stainless steel with gold decoration. The head is surmounted by a coronet, lined with murrey velvet, the cross members of which are crowned by an ancient celtic cross. The coronet has eight facets which bear (in gold) the coats of arms of the University and the seven constituent institutions which comprised the University at that time, namely University College of Wales, Aberystwyth; University College of North Wales, Bangor; University College, Cardiff; University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST); Welsh National School of Medicine and Saint David’s University College, Lampeter. The large bulbous section of the head is also engraved (in gold) on front and back with the arms of the University. The shaft of the mace is cylindrical and the centre section is engraved front and back with the device of the British Steel Corporation.

The mace, which is approximately three feet in length, was the work of the Engineering Apprentices of the British Steel Corporation, Llanwern Works, Newport. Sandwich course students from UWIST who were on placement at the Llanwern Works were also involved in its production.
