spotlight here is upon David Ellis who has largely been ignored until now. A
vicar by vocation, he translated three devotional texts and also wrote a number
of poems. He transcribed a vast body of medieval poetry, and this undoubtedly
was his most valuable endowment. This lecture seeks to assess his labour and to
account for the appeal of the Welsh bardic tradition.
